Hmmm - the grandson pulled over and she attempted to hold a flimsy cup of coffee between her KNEES while putting in cream and sugar?

There is still no mention of what the temperature of the coffee was when it scalded her. And there's no way of knowing.

Sorry - she gets the dumbass award. Even I know you don't hold a flimsy cup between my knees, even if it was filled with luke-warm breast milk.

"McDonald's coffee, if spilled....causes full thickness burns...."

Which should read "McDonald's coffee, if spilled at the exact moment of being served causes full thickness burns."

Why? Because heat exchanges at a very very rapid rate.

And at 1 Billion cups sold per year, 700 burns in a decade isn't that much at all, especially since we don't know the circumstances of those burns.

And the end result? Coffee at ONE McDonalds will be sold at 158 degrees - increasing the safety level to 60 seconds.

So when you order your 158 degree coffee at this McDonalds and you spill it, and are in traffic, and you can't get it out of your lap within one minute without causing a wreck, go sue the shit out of S. Reed Morgan. Because in his words his lawsuit was "Mission Accomplished."
