1. I could give a fuck about whether the gov't knows I read books about home improvement, astronomy, romance novels or new and exciting ways to poke my wife. This has no effect on my life, liberty or pursuit of happiness. War was declared on us and our system. I can live with martial law for a while. Unfortunately the terrorists do not wear nametags. (And how dare you make assumptions about how much I read.)
2. Nobody said politicians, American or otherwise, could be trusted not to lie. Nobody claimed America is a perfect system. But generally it beats the shit out of all others.
3. Neither Rome nor Afghanistan could be built in a day. (Add water makes its own democracy?)
