John, they might be motivated by discovery, sure plenty of scientists do it as a quest for knowledge, but sure as shit they are paid by and supported by a profit making enterprise.

Look at artists. Purest example of a pursuit that runs counter to profit. But even they know they need their angels to survive. Science is no different.
