am i crazy? (battery)

so i'm getting really sick of my battery, which currently all it does is run
down and make it so my tail light is out and i get pulled over. it seems
like i should be able to take the battery out of the equation and go
directly to whatever is giving the battery its juice. i may have to put
something in the middle of this in order to keep from blowing bulbs, but
bulbs are cheaper and easier to carry than a spare battery. so is this doable? anyone heard of this being done? thanks for any assistance, -j
