What they should do (and what I thought they were doing until now) is modify the stator and flywheel to make it into a motor/generator. Then while the engine is running you can charge the battery and run the electrics, and when you need the electric start you just energize the stator to spin the flywheel. I don't think it would really be that hard to do.
