scootrs chrome legshield trim

another scootrs related question/problem. i have the stainless legshield trim for my series 3 lammy, now scootrs said i should trim the legshield for a good fit, but, my body man said no way, it would totally take away the structural integrity, and said not to do it! anybody ever put this on their lambretta, and how did you fit it?
