performance kit reliability??

how stable are the performance piston/cylinder kits? ie, zirri, malossi, polini, etc... i am not looking to do any racing, just to add a little more "oomph" to a 150. i have heard stories about them blowing up. are these mostly just urban legends?? if i don't abuse my scoot, are they pretty reliable and durable??
