P200 questions

I just went to look at a 1979 P200. great condition, titled, 1000 miles, $1000, all keys, orig toolkit. 600 of these miles have been during the past 6 years. It wouldn't start. the seller said he rode it earlier this season. There was alot of oil around the engine side hub and gearbox. Is this from a bad seal or are there other possibilities? spark was good, battery is dead. does a P need a charged batery to start?
